Our laboratory held a year-end dinner in Tenjin last Friday eveneing. Mr. Oomagari and Mr. Sakai, who belong to Ariake National College of Technology at present and are going to enter our laboratory next year, also attended it. We could have a relaxed time together drinking beers.

We attended 17th International Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference (PVSEC17) held at Fukuoka International Congress Center on December 3-7. More than 1,400 people got together from abroad and domestic. In particular, it was distinctive that a lot of enterprises had presentations and displayed exhibitions, as compared to a ordinal conference. I was confident that the photovoltaics inductry would dramatically grow from now. Three students had the following presentations from our laboratory. Additionally they contributed to the conference conduct as a student worker. It must also be a good experience for them.

"N-TYPE β-FeSi2/P-TYPE Si HETEROJUNCTION SOLAR CELL FABRICATED BY FACING-TARGET DC SPUTTERING"
Mahmoud Shaban, Kazuhiro Nakashima, Keita Nomoto, Tsuyoshi Yoshitake

"THERMAL POST-ANNEALING EFFECT ON PHOTOVOLTAIC PROPERTIES OF n-TYPE β-FeSi2/p-TYPE Si HETEROJUNCTION"
Keita NOMOTO, Mahmoud SHABAN, Kazuhiro NAKASHIMA and Tsuyoshi YOSHITAKE

"SYNTHESIS OF NANOCRYSTALLINE-FESI2/SI HETEROJUNCTIONS FOR POTOVOLTAIC APPLICATIONS BY FACING TARGET DC SPUTTERING "
Haruhiko KONDO, Mahmoud SHABAN, Kazuhiro NAKASHIMA, Tsuyoshi YOSHITAKE

We attended an annual conference of Kyushu Chapter, the Japan Society of Applied Physics held at Kyushu Institute of Technology on December 1-2. The master course students had the presentations entitled as follows:

A. Nagano, Y. Nakagawa, T. Yoshitake, M. Itakura, N. Kuwano, T. Hara, and K. Nagayama

"Optical properties of ultrananocrystalline diamond/amorphous carbon composite films prepared by pulsed laser deposition"

Y. Nakagawa, A. Nagano, T. Yoshitake, T. Hara, K. Itakura, N. Kuwano, R. Ohtani, H. Setoyama, E. Kobayashi, K. Yamaguchi, Y. Agawa, K. Nagayama
"Hard carbon thin films prepared by an arc plasma gun"

Y. Sakamoto, K. Takeda, T. Yoshitake, M. Itakura, N. Kuwano, T. Kajiwara , and K. Nagayama

"Optical and Electrical properties of Fe3Si/ FeSi2 superlattices"

Haruhiko KONDO, Mahmoud SHABAN, Kazuhiro NAKASHIMA, Tsuyoshi YOSHITAKE

"Fabrication of nanocrystalline FeSi2/Si heterojunction photovoltaics"

K. Nomoto, M. Shaban, K. Nakashima and T. Yoshitake

"Photovoltaic properties of N-type β-FeSi2/P-type Si heterojunction"

To our happiness, Mr. Nomoto received a student presentation award!

The autumn-tinted trees at the avenue are at their best. The winter is coming on. The Chikushi campus is richly filled with green. We can actually feel the changes of the seasons in our daily life.

On September 19 and 20, the diamond group members visited Kyushu Synchrotron Light Research Center and conducted the X-ray diffraction measurement for UNCD/a-C composite films. We made an effort to observe diffractions from UNCDs, but in vain. We will retry in the near future.

Mr. Nishiyama, who is the first graduate of our laboratory and is an assistant professor of Department of Engineering, Kyushu University at present, and I attended 18th European Conference on Diamond, Diamond-Like Materials, Carbon Nanotubes, and Nitrides(9-14 September 2007) held in Berlin. We had three presentations entitled as follows: "High-Speed Photography of deposition Process of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Thin Films by Pulsed Laser Deposition", "Film growth of metastable cubic AlN by reactive pulsed laser deposition", and "Spectral absorption properties of ultrananocrystalline diamond/amorphous carbon composite films prepared by pulsed laser deposition". We could enjoy not only the conference but also the excursion around Berlin and delicious food and drink. I added Germany to my favorite countries.

Yesterday and the day before yesterday, the diamond group members went to Kyushu Synchrotron Light Research Center, which is located in Tosu city and is near from our campus, in order to measure near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra. We could obtain the valuable data on ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD). We enjoyed the experiment for a long time, forgetting the time and the fatigue.

The internship for Mr. Fujii coming from Ube national College of Technology was finished today. We got together at meeting room and had a simple send-off party in the evening. He experienced the experiment wherein n-type beta iron desilicide/p-type Si heterojunction solar cells were fabricated and the photovoltaic properties were evaluated.

08 24 07

Last Monday we held a barbeque in the campus in the evening. We welcomed Mr. Fujii who was an internship student from Ube National College of Technology to our laboratory. We could have a relax time together and deepen friendships.

Mr. Takeda (DC2), Mr. Shaban (DC1), and I attended the International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies 2007 (July 1 - 6) held in Singapore. They had the presentations entitled "Magnetic properties of Fe3Si/FeSi2 superlattices" and "Influence of Substrate Temperature on the Photovoltaic Properties of n-type β-FeSi2/p-type Si Heterojunction", respectively. In the evening, we went to the NIGHT SAFARI, which was a typical attraction of Singapore, and enjoyed the tropical night and nature.

06 08 07

Yesterday evening, the experimental group members went to Dazaifu-Tenmangu to see Japanese irises, which were typical flowers in this season. On our way to the campus, we dropped by a certain place in Dazaifu and enjoyed appreciating fireflies flying in the dark. It was fantastic that they were flying randomly in space but their emissions were synchronized in time.

Our department held a softball tournament today. We played a couple of games in the qualifier league and the results were one win and one defeat. Unfortunately, we could not advance to the finals.

On May 19, our campus was opened for the public. A large number of visitors such as families and undergraduate students came and went around the laboratories. Our laboratory introduced our research with panels and demonstrated the solar cell toy. We could have a nice time with the visitors and mates.
