Last evening our laboratory held a year-end dinner near the campus. We could have a enjoyable time together.

We went to Miyazaki city to attend an annual conference of Kyushu Chapter, the Japan Society of Applied Physics (Kibana Campus of Miyazaki University, December 29-30). All the master course students had the presentations. In the evening of the first day, we attended a social gathering. We could promote friendships between other organizations and also enjoy having delicious dishes and drinking. On the way to Miyazaki, we dropped by Ebino Plateau and enjoyed taking a natural hot spring.

Autumn-tinted trees in the campus are at their best. From now, master's course students who are going to graduate become very busy to summarize their research and write master theses. Doctor's course students who are going to get Ph. D next spring are terribly busy at present.

Today, Mr. Mohri, who graduated from our lab two years ago and at present works for a enterprise company in Tokyo, visited our lab. He informed us his honeymoon to Greece. We could enjoy talking with him. Master course first-year students who were thinking their future plans asked many questions about his daily life in the company and the economical recession situation which he felt in the company. It was a jolly day today!

Today and yesterday, the 10th Cross Straits Symposium on Materials, Energy and Environmental Sciences between Pusan National University (PNU), Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), and our graduate school was held in Chikushi-campus of Kyushu University. Additionally this year, two professors and six graduate school students attended from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). From our group, Mr. Shaban (DC3), Mr. Hanada (MC2), Mr. NOmoto (MC2), Mr. Nakagawa (MC2), and Mr. Ohmagari (MC1)  had presentations.

Ms. Sawsan, Mr. Izumi, and Mr. Yoshida entered our laboratory as a research student from October 1. They are going to enter the master's course of our department next spring. We held a welcome party near the campus last Friday.

We conducted the X-ray diffraction, Near-edge X-ray Absorption Fine-Structure, and Photoemission spectroscopy measurements with synchrotron radiation on ultrananocrystalline/amorphous carbon composite and cubic AlN films at BL12 and 15 of Kyushu Synchrotron Light Research Center last week and yesterday. The measurements were warmheartedly supported by the staffs of the center until late at night.

By the way, the interview that I received on September 4 was broadcasted in the Kensei-Nabi of Saga Cable-TV on September 27.

We met Mr. Ileda (DC3, Hamamoto-Teii Lab.) there, and went around together with him. We could attend many high-level presentations that were valuable for our research progress. For the students, everything including giving the presentation, preparing the proceeding, and attending the international conference seems to become invaluable experiences. Except for the conference, we could enjoy a Mediterranean resort．

Yesterday and the day before yesterday, Mr. Nakagawa (MC2), Mr. Ohmagari (MC1), and Yoshitake (AP) went to Kyushu Synchrotron Center to conduct near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) measurements on UNCD thin films. These are powerful method for analyzing atomic bonding configurations in the UNCD films. During the experiment, I received TV coverage. It is going to be broadcast on Saga-TV on September 27.

Mr. Nakagawa (MC2) and Mr. Ohmagari (MC1) attended SAGA-LS Summer School 2008 held at Kyushu Synchrotron Center on August 27-29. They had lectures on various measurement with synchrotron light and practical training. In addition, they could interact with students belonging to other universities.

An annual festival in Kasuga city, which was called  Andon-Matsuri, was held yesterday. There was a fireworks display in a public garden beside the campus. The area around the campus was so crowded with people viewing the fireworks.．

Takeda sensei (DC3) and Mr. Nomoto (MC2) attended International Conference on Electronic Materials 2008 held in Sydney, Australia from 28th July to 1st August 2008. Takeda sennsei had oral and poster presentations, and Mr. Nomoto had three poster presentations as follows;

They could discuss with a lot of researchers. This attendance must be the valuable experience for them!

A summer school on semiconducting silicides was held in Okayama on August 2-3. Mr. Sakai (MC1) and Mr. Kawai (MC1) attended from our laboratory. They seem to have had a worthwhile experience.

Our laboratory held a barbeque party in the campus together with Honjo laboratory last evening. This is an annual event of our laboratory in summer. We could enjoy a summer evening time  drinking beers and having grilled meats. We were so sorry that foreign students cannot attend because of religious reasons.

Mr. M. Yatabe, who graduated 5 years ago, visited our laboratory on the way to his parent's home from Tokyo this afternoon. We were very glad to talk together with him on his life including work and our recent research results. Whenever the graduates visit my laboratory, I am very pleased and  really feel that a university is an educational institution. I hope and pray their successes and happiness.  

This afternoon, Mr. D. Shigyo, who graduated from Miyoshi Lab 3 years ago, came to our department as a  recruiter of TOYO KOHAN CO., LTD. We were encouraged by his positive attitude and ambitious spirit. Congratulations on the marriage!

Last evening the experimental group members went to Dazaifu-Tenmangu to enjoy viewing Japanese irises. They are symbolic flowers of the rainy season. Japanese people have been looking forward to appreciating them since olden days. On our way to the campus we dropped by a certain place in Dazaifu and enjoyed appreciating fireflies flying in the dark. Both are typical events based on the traditional Japanese culture. 

Our department held an softball tournament last Saturday. We lost the semifinal match, but after that we won the bronze-medal match. This is the result of the effort that we have played softball every evening from April for this tournament.

An open campus was held last Saturday. We exhibited solar cell toys and panels on our researches on the third floor in C-Cube. All experimental group members got together and additionally Mr. Nagano, who graduated last March, came from Kumamoto prefecture. We could together have a nice day!

Mr. Takeda (DC3), Mr. Shaban (DC2), Mr. Nomoto (MC2) and Mr. Nakagawa (MC2) had presentations in the 6th Annual Meeting on Society of Nano Science and Technology held at Centennial Hall Kyushu University School of Medicine.

Mr. M. Kondo, Mr. Y. Sakamoto, Mr. H. Kondo, who were graduates from our laboratory, visited our laboratory during Golden Week. Yesterday Mr. Mohri dropped by our laboratory after his marriage ceremony held on May 3. We were very glad to know their doing fine. We were encouraged  by their positive attitudes.

Last evening, our laboratory held a welcome dinner for new students at Asahi Beer Community Hall located in Hakata. We together enjoyed a nice time drinking beers!

Ms. Sawsan Said Al-Riyami came from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) of Oman. She is going to enter the master's course next April after studying Japanese and getting accustomed to our laboratory research for a year. She is a scholarship student of Japan Society for the promotion of Science (JSPS).

Today an entrance ceremony was held at Chikushi Hall in our campus. 4 new master's course students, who graduated from Ariake National College of Technology, Shimane Universiry, and Ryukyu University, entered our laboratory.

A cherry blossom in the campus is at its best. It is a typical flower which mark the beginning of spring in Japan.

Takeda(DC2), Nomoto(MC1), Nakagawa(MC1) and Yoshitake(AP) attended the 55th Spring Meeting 2008 of the Japan Society of Applied Physics held in Funabashi Campus, College of Science and Technology, Nihon University. We had presentations and enjoyed the discussions.

On March 24 and 27, we conducted X-ray diffraction measurement in BL15 of Kyushu Synchrotron Light Research Center. In the previous measurement, we failed in detecting weak diffractions. This measurement was made on the modified  conditions based on the advices of the center staffs. Owing to their advices, we succeeded in the measurement!

Today the conferment of a degree was held. Our laboratory opened a celebration party and congratulated their graduations.

Our laboratory members went together on a journey to Ureshino, which was located in Saga prefecture and famous for a hot spring place. We had a lunch at a long-established hotel. After that we walked around for hours and finally took a hot spring bath.

Today our department held the research progress report session for doctor's course students. The 2nd-year doctor's course student had a presentation for 15minutes and discussion for 10 minutes. From our group, Takeda-sensei and Mr. Shaban had the presentations on their research progress. Since as many as 21 students reported, the briefing session was held from 9 o'clock in the morning to 7 o'clock in the evening.  

The master's thesis interview of our department was solemnly held in Chikushi Hall on February 20-22. The 2nd-year master's course students had presentations on their researches for 10 minutes and received questions from our department professors for 6 minutes. From our group, Mr. Nagano, Mr. Sakamoto, and Mr. Kondo had the interview and succeeded. This evening, our department gave a dinner party in appreciation of their efforts and successes!

We went to Dazaifu shrine to break the jinx and pray for our success since the experimental apparatuses were broken in succession recently and the 2nd -year and 1st-year master's course students is going to graduate and hunt a job from this respectively. The ume blossoms were at their best. We could mentally be refreshed.

We are undertaking the collaborative development on a pulsed laser ablation film deposition system, which equips with many sophisticated mechanisms such as a a droplet filter, with Advanced Optics Vacuum (AOV). This has been supported by JST. Today a proto-type deposition system arrived at our laboratory. The AOV engineers and all our laboratory members devoted all day to the apparatus installation. We were so impressed by the excellent apparatus which was completely different from our hand-made ones. The installation together with the AOV engineers was a good experience for the students including me from the educational viewpoint.

This afternoon, Mr. Fukugawa, who graduated from our group two years ago, visited our department as a recruiter of TOKAI CARBON Co. Ltd. and dropped by our laboratory. Dr. Hara, who got Ph. D from our laboratory and works for Ariake National College of Technology as a lecturer at present, and Takeda sensei, who is a lecturer of Fukuoka Institute of Technology and also is a doctor's course student of our laboratory, happened to come to our laboratory in order to do their experiment today. We were very glad to konw Mr. Fukugawa were getting along very well!

Mr. Nomoto, who is a 1st-year master's course student, received a student presentation award of an annual conference of Kyushu Chapter, the Japan Society of Applied Physics held at Kyushu Institute of Technology on December 1-2, 2007. A diploma of merit and prize were delivered to him. We congratulated his receiving and also were pleased!

Mr. Ogawa and Mr. Kondo, who graduated from our laboratory two and one years ago respectively, visited our department and laboratory as recruiters of KYOCERA Corporation. They introduced their company to the graduate students and additionally told them how to do well in a company. We were very glad to know they were getting along well in their company and Mr. Ogawa's marriage!

Yesterday afternoon, our department held a seminar in which 1st-year master's course students had presentations on their researches (presentation 9 min. and discussion 5 min.) in front of professors and students of our department. Mr. Nomoto and Mr. Nakagawa had the presentations in this seminar. After this, the 1st-year student prepare himself for job hunting.
