On Monday, we carried out a general cleaning of all laboratory rooms, and held a end-year party near an izakaya near a campus in the evening. We have been so busy from September.

Mr. Yoshida and Mr. Izumi, who graduated last spring and work for JFT Steel and Toray at present, dropped by the laboratory on the way to their parent's home. I was very glad to see them and know that everything goes well for them.

Mr. Hirakawa, who graduated from a master's course last spring and work for Nippon Steel Corporation at present, visited our laboratory. We were very glad that he is highly motivated for his work and has a nice time everyday. M1 students were so interested in his explanation concerning his company. In the evening, we had a dinner at an izakaya near a campus.

Ms. Tominaga (RA), Mr. Ohmagari (D2), Mr. Sonoda (M2), and Mr. Yamashita (M2) attended 2011 MRS Fall Meeting held in Boston on Nov. 28 - Dec. 2, 2011. They could hear a variety of presentations owing to the conference being so huge and enjoy discussing in their presentations. In addition, Boston seems to have attracted them.

The 21th International Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference (PVSEC21) was held at Fukuoka Sea Hawk Hotel on Nov 28th -Dec 2nd, 2011. From our laboratory, Mr. Promros (D3), Mr. Katamune (M1), and Yoshitake (AP) had presentations. It was a good opportunity to understand the present state of research and development.

All the master's course 1st year students (4 persons) of our laboratory had oral presentations at a domestic annual conference held by the Japan Society of Applied Physics, Kyushu Chapter, on Nov. 26-27th at Kagoshima University. These are the first opportunities for them to have oral presentations and they should have become valuable experiences including the preparations. We stayed at a hysterical hotel with a hot spring  and had a relax time in the evening.  The campus of Kagoshima University was very beautiful owing to autumnal colored leaves.

The 13th Cross Straits Symposium on Materials, Energy and Environmental Sciences among Pusan National University (PNU), Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), and our graduate school were held in our campus on December 23-24th. From our group, Mr. Promros(D3), Mr. Ohmagari(D2), Mr. Ichinose(M2), Mr. Sonoda (M2), and Mr. Yamashita (M2) had presentations. The oral presentation of Mr. Ohmagari was selected as

Ms. Suphattra and Ms. Naraporn from Chulalongkorn University had reports on their internship researches conducted for a month. They separately did the researches on the fabrication and evaluation of nano-carbon solar cells for a month. They experimentally obtained a huge amount of data and analyzed them, and had excellent presentations on them  in English. We are very glad if this internship is a good experience on researches before their entering the master's of Chulalongkorn University. Their results will be fed back to our research from this. After the report, we went to  Hakara and opened a farewell party. Except for the researches, we took them to Dazaifu city and showed typical cultural places.

Mr. Promros (D3) attended the International Conference on Advanced Electromaterials (ICAE 2011) held in Jeji of Korea on November 7-10th, 2011, and had three poster presentations.

Today, our grad school had an open lecture to the public and introduced the researches of several laboratories at the booths. We joined and introduce our research at our booth. Many foreign students belonging to a GCOE doctoral course in Ito campus and families visited.  

Ms. Suphattra and Ms. Naraporn came to our laboratory from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) to have internships. They belong to Diamond Group and do researches together with laboratory members for a month. This afternoon, we opened a welcome tea party in the laboratory.

This afternoon we had a farewell party for Ms. Sausan (D1) & debrief meeting on Diamond 2011. Ms. Sausan is going to have an internship on nanodiamond in Haselt Universsity, Belgium from next week. The students that attended Diamond 2011 explained by showing pictures, which made us understand well that they spent a nice time there.

Assist. Prof. Tominaga, Ms. Sausan (D1), Mr. Ichinose (M2), Mr. Ueda (M1), and Mr. Katamune (M1) attended 22th European Conference on Diamond, Diamond-Like Materials, Carbon Nanotubes, and Nitrides held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on Sep. 4-8, 2011, and had poster presentations. We worried about their departure from Osaka International Airport because the departure time was just overlapped with a typhoon coming, but the departure was just in time. The attendance at the international conference including the travel should be good experiences for them. 

Last Saturday Mr. Sakai, who graduated from a master's course last year, visited our laboratory. We could have a talk for sufficient time.

Last Friday we measured EXAFS spectra of iron disilicide films at beamline 11 of Saga Light Source, Kyushu Synchrotron Light Research Center. We could complete the measurements owing to the technical support by Dr. Ohtani, who was a researcher of Saga Light Source.

Mr. Elias Garratt, who is a doctoral course student of Western Michigan University at present, visited our laboratory on 16-18th. The motivation of the visit is that his research partially overlapped with our research on ultrananocrystalline diamond. We could have valuable discussions and learn a lot. In the evening on 16th we went to a beer hall located in Hakata and had a joyful time in the evening. In the afternoon on 17th, we took him to Kyushu Synchrotron Light Research Center and there Dr. Sumitani of the center explained the apparatuses of the center in detail. On 18th, Mr. Hanada (D3), Mr. Iwasaki (M1), and Mr. Noda (M1) showed him Dazaifu area. We will be very glad if this become an opportunity to start an international collaboration with his laboratory!

Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Kobayashi, who graduated from master's course last spring, dropped by the laboratory. In the evening lab members had a dinner together at an izakaya near a campus.

Mr. Mohri, who graduated from master's course 5 years ago, visited our laboratory this afternoon. We had a nice time talking about our recent lives. In addition, We asked him to support the setup of a NEXAFS analysis software and he was willing to check problems in the installation of the software. Owing to his kindness, many problems thus far were solved and we could see daylight.

The department softball tournament, which was the continuation of that on June 14th, was held on 16th. We won all games as follows: 0-0 (won in janken) (vs Nishida Lab), 6-4 (vs Honjo Lab), and 1-0 (vs Yamaki Lab), and won the championship! This is the first victory in the department soft ball tournament since our laboratory was established.

Yesterday diamond group members attended the 5th Kyushu Synchrotron Center Workshop held at the center. Mr. Ohamagari (D2), Ms. Sausan (D1), Mr. Ichinose (M2), Mr. Ueda (M1), and Mr. Katamune (M1) had poster presentations on experimental results obtained from the spectroscopic measurement with synchrotron radiation. In the evening, we attended a stand-up dinner party and enjoyed a joyful time.  

Last evening, we had a barbecue together with Honjo Laboratory in the mid-garden of a campus. Fortunately we could hit a fine day in rainy season. We had a joyful time drinking bears and eating meals. We cerebrated the victory in the job hunting of M2 students.  

Our department held a softball game tournament today. Our laboratory has practiced nearly every evening for this tournament. We passed the league. When we had the 1st match of the tournament, all the game were suspended because of heavy rain. In the evening, we had a tea party in the laboratory.

Last evening, we went to Dazaifu Shrine to view Japanese irises. It was their best time. We dropped by a cafe beside the pond and eat rice cakes, which are called Umegae-mochi and noted products in Dazaifu area.

Last Saturday an open campus  was held. We hold a booth on solar cells, wherein the principle of solar cells was introduced in poster and solar cell toys for kids were demonstrated. All experimental group members got together and could have a nice day!

Diamond group members participated a training class on thin film and powder XRD apparatus introduced into BL15 of SAGA-LS recently on May 31 and June 1. It was a user-friendly apparatus. It enable us to measure the reflectivity of films and XRD spectrum in various modes. It was so user-friendly.

Mr. Hanada (D3) has a presentation in International Conference on New Diamond and Nano Carbons 2011 (NDNC2011) held in Matsue last week. He seems to have enjoyed not only the conference but also an excursion to Izumo.

A student room was dramatically modified by removing a partition between two rooms. Owing to it, the  room became bright and we can open an entire meeting there from this.

During the Golden Week holiday, Mr. Nakagawa and Mr. Kondo, who graduated from our laboratory two and three years ago, dropped by our laboratory. We could talk about the recent event of each other.

At the end of last month, we invited Dr. Magome belonging to SAGA-LS and had a discussion on the Rydberg analysis of XRD data. After that, we held a friendly dinner gathering near a campus. We could have a joyful time drinking beers.

Last Friday our laboratory opened a welcome party for new students and new assistant professor at Asahi Beer Garden located in Hakata in the evening. We spent a joyful time drinking fresh beers produced there and eating roasts. Dr. Okajima and Dr. Magoma, who are researches of Kyushu Synchrotron Light Source Center and gives valuable comments to us concerning our measurements at the center, joined the party and enjoyed together.

Mr. Ohmagari (D2) received an award from Student Support Group, Kyushu University. His recent work was highly evaluated. Yesterday, the award ceremony, wherein award certificates and prizes were handed to winners, was held in Hakozaki Campus.

This afternoon our grad school held an entrance ceremony in our campus. One and four students entered the doctoral and master's courses of our laboratory. The master's course students came from Ariake National College of Technology (2 persons), Kyushu Institute of Technology, and Kyushu University.   

Today, Dr. A. Tominaga arrived at the post of assistant professor from Kyushu Synchrotron Light Research Center. She is going to expand our research on diamond toward the area of applied chemistry.

On 30 and 31st, we measured NEXAFS and X-ray photoemission spectra at beam line 12 of the Kyushu Synchrotron Research Center. The measurement went well as planed. This time, we confirmed that valence band spectra could be successfully measured for our samples.

On 25th we went to Kyushu Synchrotron Research Center to measure extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra. The measurement was conducted at beam line 11. Although the measurement at the beam line was for the first time for us, it went well owing to the support of Dr. R. Ohtani, who was a researcher belonging to the center. From this, we will spend much time to analyze the data. The measurement was so hard for Mr. Ohmagari (D1) and Mr. Ichinose (M1), since they came directly from the celebration party without sleeping. In the afternoon, Mr. Yoshida and Mr. Izumi, who graduated yesterday, visited the center to finally thank staffs of the center for their kindness thus far.

This afternoon, the conferment ceremonies of our grad school and department were held in our campus. After that, our laboratory opened a party and celebrated the graduates. To our happiness, Ms. Sausan and Mr. Hirakawa were selected as the top and second student of the department respectively, and they received awards from the grad school and department.

Our laboratory took a trip to Beppu and Yufuinn in Ohita prefecture. We enjoyed taking a hot spring in Beppu on the first day. The next day, we went around Yufuin. We really felt that time flies this year. We could carry out much work this year owing to so much effort in a body of the lab members. This trip is a good opportunity to release physical and mental stresses.

We visited Dazaifu Shrine in laboratory. Tobi-Ume, which is a symbolic flower of the shrine, was in full bloom. 

Today and yesterday our department held a doctoral course entrance examination and master's thesis interviews. All the M2 students had excellent presentations on their researches. This evening, a dinner party was held in a restaurant in the campus to appreciate their efforts and successes.

To our happiness, Ms. Sausan (M2) received a presentation award from The Japan Society of Applied Physics Kyushu Chapter. Today the award certificate was delivered to our laboratory by post mail. This award is the reward of her daily efforts. We praised her.

Our research on the application of semiconducting ultrananocrystalline diamond/hydrogenated amorphous carbon composite to photodiodes is introduced in NanotechJapan BulletinのVol.  4, No. 1 (2011). This is a web magazine published by "Nanotechnology Network Japan" Program, and this issue was published yesterday.

This week several graduates from our laboratory visited our department as recruiters and dropped by our laboratory. Mr. Yuri of Mitsubishi Electric Corp came from Nagoya on Tuesday, and Mr. Sakamoto and Mr. Yamashita of Kyocera Corp came from Kagoshima. Their lively atmosphere encouraged us. Friday evening, they opened a drinking party together with current laboratory students near the campus.

Last Thursday our department held a seminar in which 1st-year master's course (M1) students had mid-reports on the research in oral presentation (presentation 9 min and discussion 5 min.) in front of professors and students of our department. From our laboratory, Mr. Ichinose, Mr. Sonoda, Mr. Chen, and Mr. Yamashita had presentations.

The data of a open campus was determined. It will be held on June 4, 2011. Our laboratory is going to hold a booth concerning our researches and photovoltaics at the third floor of C-Cube building wherein our laboratory rooms exist. For undergraduate students that are going to take an entrance examination of our grad school, this is a good opportunity to check candidate laboratories.

It was the final day of the SSH program cooperated with Physics Club of Johnan High School today. We discussed and polished presentation figures and manuscript for a debriefing session.
